Peary wrote on both sides of the flip-up pages (1909 diary)
Sample of the National Archives microfilm. The Peary family deposited several diaries, numerous documents & letters in 1970. The illustration (below) shows how it was recorded. The photographed pages are laid out from left to right as both sides were filmed.

Peary's diary is a common memo pad. It  had stitching to hold the pages together, while a metal coil is more common today.
