Peary 1909 Diary details
How Peary used the backs of pages for personal thoughts not related to trip.
Illustration of the layout for Peary's diary pages.

Generally, the bottom pages contain the daily narrative, while the upper portion was used for personal notes, ideas, sketches, etc.

The upper pages are really the backs of the lower pages when flipped up. Peary did use a few of these to finish his narrative. This happened because he reached the end of the memo pad and had to go back to write on 5  of the "upper pages". These can be seen on the top portions of the pages for March 3–7.
